Fertiliser Workers Entertained
Officers of the Cape York and those associated with the discharging of the cargo of fertiliser at Kioreroa were entertained last night at a reception arranged by representatives of importing firms. . During the evening a painting of the Whangarei Harbour was presented to the ship’s company by the chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr E. L. Whimp). Receiving the gift on behalf of Captain Hunter, who was unable to be present, Chief-Officer Cormack said that the visit to Whangarei had been most enjoyable and the hospitality shown officers and crew had been appreciated. With Mr L. A. Johnson as toastmaster, the following toasts were honoured:— The King (Mr Whimp); Ship’s Company (Mr W. M. Fraser—Mr Cormack); Engineers (Mr E. W. Rickard—Chief-Engineer Chalk); Harbour Board Officials (Mr T. R. Overton —Mr H. E. Hewlett, Mr Fraser) ; Merchants (Mr E. G. Appleton—Messrs L. Marquand, S. Blow, G. Todd, C. V. Stringer, A. Rowlands); Stevedores (Mr Blow— Mr C. A. McCartie); Waterfront and Harbour Board Workers (Mr Todd —Mr M. A. McKenzie); Transport Operators (Mr G. Hughes—Messrs A. C. Pryde, J. Crawford, W. L. Sirl. E. S. Ralls); Artists (Mr Johnson —Mr R. Goodison). Songs were given by Fourth-Engineer Gaffney, Third-Engineer Kennedy and Mr lan Smith, Mr Goodison being the accompanist.
