School Committees Oil Children's Films

CHRISTCHURCH, Wed. (P.A.).— After discussing the effects of films upon children the annual conference of the Dominion Fedei’ation of School Committees' Association this morning passed a remit that proprietors of picture theatres be forced to abide by the censor’s decision in not admitting children under the age of 15 where films were recommended for adults. As originally submitted the remit provided that the age be 14. but an amendment raising the age to 15 was earned.

Members said that a more discriminating approach by parents was needed

The last remit on the subject had been passed on to the Internal Affairs Department who had placed the onus on the pai’ents. Mr W. J. Wilson (Wellington) said the child mind craved a certain amount of excitement which should do no harm. There was a “lot of humbug” talked about films. Some films were absolutely rubbish, but the majority were harmless.

Delegates claimed that it was necessary to ensure that in double-feature programmes films suitable only for adults should not be put on with films for general exhibition.
