Frigates To Replace N.Z. Corvettes?
WELLINGTON, Thu. <Sp.)— No decision has been made as to the future of the!' two New Zealand corvettes Arbutus and Arabis, said the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) yesterday. The Arbutus and Arabis both belong to the modified Flower class of corvettes. ■ The original Flower design was built in large numbers for patrol duties against enemy submarines and aircraft and did yeoman service in several theatres of war. Since the war ended, however, the popularity of the corvette has given way to another wartime “small ship,’’ the frigate. RETURN TO R.N. The frigate is definitely more suitable as a peacetime ship. It is expected, therefore, that the majority of the Flower class corvettes will be sold or transferred to other navies. For these and other reasons, it is expected that the itwo New Zealand corvettes will be returned to the Royal Navy, from which they were obtained in 1944. Their disposal is linked with the future composition of the Royal New Zealand Navy.
