Work Commenced On Carruth Block Houses
WORK has commenced on the block of nine state house units on the Carruth block in Third Avenue, Whangarei. One of these is a two-unit house, giving a total of 10 units in Third Avenue. Profiles for three of the units had been laid out yesterday and the boxing for the concrete foundations is well under way.
The contractors (Messrs A. M. and D. B. Haigh) hope to commence running the foundation on Monday. Mr D. B. Haigh said that he did not anticipate any major hold-up on the job from material shortages. 57 UNDER CONSTRUCTION While there is a fluctuating shortage of several lines he expects to be able to maintain a steady progress on the whole block. Borough council employees are engaged in installing the water mains and drainage to serve the block and, in the case of the Third Avenue houses, electric power is already available. Pipes have been delivered for the storm water culvert at the end of the present formed portion of Second Avenue in preparation for continuing the avenue through the block where the water pipes are being laid in preparation for letting further contracts.
With the 10 units on which work, has commenced, the total of state houses under construction in Whangarei is 57. When the remaining contracts in the Carruth block are let there will be 107 houses under construction
