Campaign For Uniform Road Markings

NEW PLYMOUTH, Wed. (Sp.)—Begun before the war on the recommendations of the New Zealand Road Safety Council, the preparation of a bulletin setting out recommended road markings has been resumed.

Advice to this effect was received by local bodies in Taranaki from the Commissioner oT Transport (Mr G. L. Laurenson) yesterday. It is hoped to issue a cyclostyled draft to local authorities in the near future so that they can study the recommendations and forward any suggestions before the bulletin in its final form is printed. Mr Laurenson said that road markings. as distinct from traffic signs, were not generally prescribed by regulation, and there was a lack of uniformity in the types of markings adopted in different centres. Uniformity of centre lines and the like and in the use of words and symbols and the indication. of objects such as fire plugs would ensure that those who used the roads would readily recognise the markings.
