Temporary Building For Ballantyne's
CHRISTCHURCH, Wed. (P.A.)--The Minister of Works (Mr Semple) who visited Christchurch yesterday authorised the district building controller to issue a permit for the immediate construction of temporary buildings for J. Ballantyne and Co. Ltd. The buildings will be on the site of that destroyed by fire nearly two months ago with the loss of 41 lives. The existing exterior and dividing walls, most of which are sound for one storey, will be used. A temporary one-storey building will be erected along the whole frontages on Colombo and Cashel Streets, with a depth of 54ft, said the architect, Mr G. T. Lucas.
Most of the remaining walls and girders would carry the structure. The verandah along Cashel Street would probably remain and a temporary one would be built along Colombo Street.
It was expected that the legal inspections which had delayed the completion of the demolition of the dangerous upper walls would end this week and that the contractors for this job would be able to continue.
When the demolitions were completed a start with building would be made. The detailed plans had still to be approved.
