NEWS OF THE DAY

COMPLIMENT TO MOTORISTS “Vehicles have no brains —you have.” So proclaims a road sign in a traffic zone in Princes Street, Edinburgh, Scotland, says Mr D. L. Ross, of Whangarei, who returned from an extensive visit to England. Scotland and the United States this week.

REFRESHER COURSES Refresher courses for about 200 solecharge teachers from schools graded II and 111 in Auckland and Taranaki districts nave been abandoned at the request of the Health Department. In view of the epidemic -they have been postponed until later in the year, and will not take place before May. JUMPING-SHEET SOON The Whangarei Fire Board expects to add a jumping-sheet to the firebrigade’s equipment shortly. The chairman (Mr R. V. Thompson) said today that aSvice had been received that such equipment would arrive in New Zealand soon. The board had had a sheet on order for a long time, but delivery had been delayed owing to the war, he said. PARROT LEMON A Lisbon lemon grown by Mrs W. Godfrey at Tc Kopuru, Northern Wairoa, apparently decided to be distinctive. like a small parrot—complete in this imitation to even having the curled feather under the beak --the fruit is some four inches long and upwards of an inch and a half at the widest portion. It is on display in the main window of the Northern Advocate.

TO COMPLETE DREDGING The Whangarei Harbour Board’S suction dredge, which was recently employed in deepening and enlarging the swinging basin and berthage space at Kioreroa, is now being prepared to complete the work of dredging the Town Basin to a depth of 10ft at low water on spring tides. The sludge will be pumped through several hundred feet of pipes to the area being reclaimed above the Victoria Bridge. This task is expected to occupy about three months.

KILLED THE CAT Curiosity killed the cat at the Whangarei Town Wharf yesterday. The unfortunate feline apparently saw the open end of a dredge pipe on a barge and decided to investigate. She climbed up an incline and fell down a “goose neck” bend at the junction of two pipes. At the bottom of the sft drop was a pool of water, through which she swam to a drier place. Her distressed calls were heard and the SPCA was called in. Consultations with the dredge authorities were of no avail, as the two winches necessary to take the pipes apart were under repair. The cat was heard no more tins morning and her death by suffocation is presumed. DISCRIMINATING SEAGULL ■' Besides being a keen fisherman this Waipu resident is an inveterate pipesmoker. Like all fishermen he can tell a good story but his latest concerns not fish and the size thereof but a seagull —and his pipe—to him the darling of his heart but to others an obnoxious hunk of waterlogged wood. It appears that the seagull was intent on the bait bag and was only being kept at bay with difficulty. While the fisherman was a few yards away attending one of his lines, the scavenger swooped, found it could not get at the bait so, apparently in revengeful mood, picked up the pipe which had been left momentarily on the bait bag. and with it gripped firmly in its beak went aloft. Below the fisherman watched, angry, and in fear and trembling that his precious should be carried across the water and lost for ever. His fears, however, were not | realised as the succulent morsel was j realised as the succulent morsel was | was retrieved, slightly soiled, but no more smelly.
