Chinese Squatters Battle With Police

HONGKONG, Mon.—Police and Chinese squatters in the former walled city of Kowloon fought a pitched battle this morning when police sought to destroy 20 shacks re-erectecl on a site cleared for health reasons a week ago. More than 100 Chinese hurled stones at the advancing police, who replied with teai'-gas bombs and revolver fire. Most of the shots were fired into the air, but several Chinese were wounded. The police, who advanced behind rattan shields, suffered only minor casualties. They eventually overcame the opposition and destroyed the shacks. The incident is the culmination of a two months' dispute which is simir lar to those whch have been recurring for 50 years over the jurisdiction of this tiny area.
