Severe Drought In Horowhenua Area
LEVIN, Fri. (P.A.).—The worst drought for many years is threatening market garden and farm produce in Horowhenua.
Reports from the Shannon, Otaki and Levin districts say farmers and residents are disturbed by the lack of substantial falls of rain.
The Levin Dairy Company's butter production decreased by one ton compared with last January, and market gardeners say crops .will be ruined unless several days’ rain is experienced within the next week. Otaki is parched and some fires are occurring in scrub and grass. In Shannon farmers are hastening to put fat sheep and lambs through the works as pastures cannot carry them further.
Many housewives are carrying water long distances.
