Heavy Rainfall In All Parts Of North

In the two hours between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. yesterday Kaitaia was deluged with 1.41 in of rain. Of the total fall of 1.98 in for the 24 hours to 9 a.m. today, 1.96 fell between 2 p.m, and 7 p.m. No damage is reported.

Nearly 2in. of rain fell in Whangarct yesterday. Of the total fall of 1.83 in„ I.sin. fell in five hours. Stormwater drains in some streets could not cope with the water which banked up to the kerbs.

Pain has now fallen on seven of the iO days of January, giving a total rainfall of 2.74 in. The average figure for January is 4.80 in„ and more than half this amount has been recorded to date. The rain was particularly valuable to farmers on lighter types of soil. On the heavier soil type land, where caspalurn is the main grass, the rain is equally welcome and will doubtless contribute to even more prolific growin than is now apparent. ! Yields of paspalum hay should be j increased considerably. A few farmers iost hay crops as a result of the fall but most of them kept a wary eye on the weather before deciding to cut their crops. HEAVY AT AUCKLAND The rain will also have a beneficial effect on fodder crops which have been making good progress this season, piornising above average yields. 7he rainfall was general throughout the /• i.wklanr. Tire rain should enable Northland to maintain the increase in production figures of. 15 to 20 per cent which has been achieved in the spring and early summer.

After a prolonged dry spell Rotorua experienced a specially heavy rainfall, 2.64 in. falling in the last 24 hours.
