OBITUARY
Mrs D. W, Hill
The death of Mrs Douglas W. Hill, which occurred at Takapuna on Tuesday, has removed one of the pioneer settlers in the Kaipara district, a member of the well-known McCarroll family. The eldest daughter of the late Mr John McCarroll, of Mareretu, Mrs Hill came to New Zealand with her father and one brother in 1384. Mr McCarroll commenced business in Auckland pending the arrival of the other members of the family, who arrived at Auckland in 1886.
They men moved to Mareretu, and the old homestead is still in possession of the family, the eldest son being the occupant. * j Mrs Hill married Mr Douglas Hill, of Paparoa, and they took up land at Matakohe, being the neighbours of the Coates family. Later they moved to Whenuapai, where they farmed until eight or nine years ago, when they moved to Takapuna. SEVERE ILLNESS Ten years ago Mrs Hill suffered a very severe illness, as a result of which she was bedridden till the time of hexdeath..
During this long period she retained a keen intellect and kept up a large correspondence with relatives and friends, She was devotedly nursed by her daughter. From her girlhood days Mrs Hill took a keen interest in the social life of the community and she was renowned for the help and cheerfulness she brought to all who needed help at a time when the Kaipara district was in a primitive state. Mr Hill survives his wife, and Miss Joan Hill, of Takapuna, and Mr Bruce Hill, of Tikipunga. are the members of the family. Mr J. N. McCarroll. of Whangarei, is a brother. The funex-al took place on Wednesday at Takapuna.
