Ballot For Watersiders

Whangarei watersiders conducted a secret ballot to elect new members to the ranks of their union this week.

Eighteen applications had been received for the nine vacancies to build the union up to full strength. Each union member was given two counters, one black and one white.

As each application came forward, members who approved of the aspirant joining their ranks, dropped a white counter into a locked ballot-box. Those who did not approve put in a black counter. Scrutineers tallied the black and white counters for each applicant. The applications were dealt with singly, and as each one came forward, union members were forbidden to say anything either for or against the candidate for membership.

In this manner ballots were taken and successful applications were elected according to the percentage- of votes cast in their favour.
