Michael Had To Bow To Force
GENEVA, Wed. GO a.m.)—Ex-King Michael of Rumania, had either to bow to force or become a prisoner, says the Journal de Geneva, quoting ‘‘a sure source,” reports Reuter. It adds that Prime Minister Groza sent an urgent and unexpected summons to Michael on December 30. Michael drove to the palace of his aunt, Princess Elizabeth, in Bucharest.
There Groza and the Communist deputy Prime Minister (Georgiu-Dej) presented the Act of Abdication and asked Michael to sign immediately. Michael was extremely surprised and asked for time to study the document.
Then outside he saw that a regiment loyal to the Government had surrounded the Palace.
Michael did not wish to bring fresh tragedies upon the country and signed.
