Yale Launch At The Bay

OTEHEI BAY Thu. (Sp.).—The Yale expedition launch, Manana 111, has arrived at Otehei Bay, in the Bay of Islands, from Auckland. American-built, the launch is attracting considerable interest. -The Manana 111 is 51ft in length with a beam of 12ft 6in. She draws 4ft 6in of water.

Powered by two 165 h.p. Diesel engines, she sailed 1600 miles in United States waters to the docks for transhipment to New Zealand. Special stabilising outriggers, each extending to 55ft on each side, are being fitted to the launch while she is at anchor in the bay. These will help to keep the vessel steady while research work is being undertaken.

The special cradle built to accommodate the launch on her trip to New Zealand cost SSOO, while freight charges for the voyage amounted to S4OO. At Otehei Bay everything is a scene of activity. The main body of the expedition is expected on January 29 and the scientists a week earlier. A recent advertisement for additional staff at Hassal’s Lodge brought 20 or 30 replies from all parts of the Dominion.
