Tariff Agreement 'Suicidal' For Aust.

CANBERRA, Wed. (11 am)—Parts of the international tariff agreement signed at Geneva on October 30 were described as suicidal for Australia by Mr L Withall, director of the Associated Chambers of Manufacturers. “Our industrial progress will henceforth be subject to the veto of any, or perhaps all, of 40 or 50 countries ( including eventually Japan and Germany,” he said. “Australia has surrendered her tariff autonomy to an external organisation, where her voting strength and influence will be wholly insignificant.” The article of the agreement covering the reduction of tariffs and the elimination of preferences was not only repugnant to every decent Australian and good Britisher, but was economically stupid and dishonest, he added.
