Major Upset in Mens Singles: Painter Beaten

AUCKLAND, Tue. (P.A.)—The New Zealand singles titleholder, R. McKenzie, had a comparatively easy match today when he met M. A. Wakefield (Waikatd). Wakefield took only one game in the first set, but settled down tis the match progressed and had the champion running on one or two occasions in the following sets, which he lost M—6, 4 —6.

Wakefield chased everything in the 'hast set and held McKenzie to 4-all. The final two games were fought mainly from the baseline. Jell' Robson (Otagoi made a disappointing number of mistakes against the mercurial Aucklander, Trevor Pountney, but Robson was more consistent, which gave him a straight sets’ victory. The veteran.
