Meat Strike May Spread
SYDNEY, Tue. (10.30 a.m.) The state executive of the Meat Industry Employees’ Union has endorsed the strike of a section of employees at Homebush abattoirs, but has decided not to extend the stoppage, pending a meeting of the Meat Reference Board today.
If this meeting does not settle the strike a wide extension throughout New South Wales appears certain. - Workers at the smaller abattoirs at Riverstone and Auburn are already considering action. Whatever the outcome of the strike, the distribution of meat throughout the metropolitan area has been wrecked for this week, according to the secretary of the Master Butchers' Association (Mr T. A. Herbert). Homebush supplies GO per cent cf the Sydney retail trade and it is impossible for the minor abattoirs to increase their supply. The stoppage, which is in the byproducts section, concerns ICO men directly, but has thrown.. 1000 out of work. The stoppage arose through dissatisfaction at the amount of the wage increases recently granted.
