Confidence In French Govt.

PARIS, Mon. (II a.m.) —The Assembly gave the Government its first vote of confidence on the “Soak the rich, save the franc” bill. It rejected by 351 votes to 268 Communist and Right Wing amendments seeking concessions for artisans, merchants and industrialists. The Communists and Right Wing members submitted four other sets of amendments. The Prime Minister (M. Schuman) announced that he would regard the •vote on each as a vote of confidence. After an all-day debate, the Assembly voted confidence in the Schuman Government by rejecting five groups of amendments to the “Save the franc” bill by majorities varying from 32 to 39. The amendments sought exemptions from the special levy for various categories of merchants, industrialists, farmers and war victims.
