Auckland Position Cc§yses Concern

AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.).—With a record influx of cargoes from overseas over the Christmas and New Year period, severe congestion will occur at the port of Auckland before the end of this week unless the rate of cargo removal is accelerated, said the chairman of the Cargo Control Committee (Mr G. J. Browne) today. ‘‘The majority of importers and merchants have been helping the authorities to shift goods, but the clearance must be speeded up if serious congestion is to be avoided," he added. Since Christmas Eve about 25,000 tons of cargo had been unloaded, of which about a third had been left on the wharf and the balance carted away. Unless the goods were removed in greater volume from tomorrow the wharf sheds and stores would be congested, discharge would be hampered, and wholesale firms put to considerable additional expense.
