Congested Wharf Sheds In Wellington

WELLINGTON Tue. (Sp.).—-Nearly 80.000 tons of cargo arrived at the pert of Wellington during the month of December, this being nearly twice the usual amount received from overseas in the last month of the year. Only a few merchants responded to the appeal asking them to retain their staffs and open their warehouses to clear their consignments without delay. Progress in the lifting of cargo from the wharf sheds during the holidays had proved unsatisfactory, said T. Blewman, chief traffic officer of the Wellington Harbour Board. He said the goods remaining uncollected were taking up so much room in the sheds that the rate of discharge from ships had to be slowed down. About half of a cargo of 780 tons of dried and canned fruits which arrived from Australia before Christmas was still in the sheds’he added. A special call was made by the vessel Ottawa Valley to Wellington to unload these fruits in -time for Christmas. This was done at the request of merchants. Unloading was completed by December 20.
