Daring Rescue From Burning Tanker
SAN FRANCISCO, Fri. (11 a.m.)— Thirty-five members of a tanker, the Sparrows Point, which caught fire 125 miles south of San Francisco, were removed from three lifeboats in a daring rescue operation, directed by a Coastguard tow vessel. A search is continuing for two men missing following the collision with the Canadian motor-ship Manx Fisher. Other members of the crew were picked up by the light of torches and the glow of ship, approximately five hours after the collision. The rescue was made in a moderate swell after the dense fog lifted. It was hampered by the fact that the Coastguard tow vessel. Minnetonka, not ordinarily used for rescue operations, was towing a de-commis-sioned Coastguard cutter.
Twenty-one of the men were picked up by the Minnetonka. The first 14 to be rescued were taken aboard by the tanker Colina.
