Northland Champ. Tourney Concludes

TABLE TENNIS

The Northland Table Tennis championship tournament, which concluded in the Kamo Hall last night, was the biggest and most successful yet held.

The 140 entries were representative of the three associations, Whangarei, Pay of Islands and Northern Wairoa and the trophies, of a total value of fb3, were well distributed among the affiliated clubs.

The programme went to schedule on the three nights of play and reflected credit on the Whangarei association, which organised the tournament. The secretary (Mr J. Windress) of Whangarei, and the tournament manager (Mr R. Morrison) of Portland, are deserving of special mention. Mrs Morrison also played a prominent part.

The Mayor of Whangarei (Mr W. Jones) presented the trophies at the conclusion of the tournament.

The recipients were: — Men’s singles, J. Davis (Whakapara); runner-up, F. Madden (Whangarei). Women’s singles. Mrs Rundstrom (Dargaville); runner-up, Miss D. Bennett (Whakapara). B grade men’s singles, J. Kingi (Okaihau); runner-up, D. Simpkin (Dargaville). B grade women’s singles, Miss M. Bennett (Whakapara); runner-up, Miss H. Mackie (Whakapara). Junior men’s singles, P. Tagg (Whangarei); runners-up, J. Davis and J. Bennett (Whakapara). Women’s doubles, Mrs J. Davis and Miss D. Bennett (Whakapara); run-ners-up, Mrs McCready and Miss R. Kake (Okaihau). Combined doubles, J. Davis and Mrs Davis (Whakapara); runners-up, J. Bennett and Miss D. Bennett (Whakapara). LAST NIGHT’S PLAY

The men's, women’s and combined doubles events were staged last night before a good attendance. F. Madden and A. E. Tagg, the successful men's pair, played at the top of their form and in the final were far more aggressive than J. Davis and J. Bennett, of Whakapara. The result was never in doubt. The women’s doubles final was the best game of the night. Mrs Davis and Miss D. Bennett lost the first set to Mrs McCready and Miss Kake and had to battle very hard to overcome their opposition.. The defence of Mrs Davis was a feature of the match and actually was the winning factor. The final of the combines brought old rivals of the Whakapara club together. Davis and Mrs Davis proved far superior but, here again, it was the wonderful defensive play of Mrs Davis which swung the tide in favour of her husbana ana herself.
