80,000 Attend Newcastle Carnival
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. More than 80,010 people crowded Newcastle beach last night for .the official opening of the Newcastle and Hunter Valley sesquicentenary celebrations. The Federal Minister of Health (Senator McKenna) on behalf of the Prime Minister (Mr Chifley) officially opened the celebrations. A feature was a fireworks display which began when experts from Sydney fired a rocket parachute flare of 40.000 candlepower. It rose to 15,000 ft and lit the whole city for SOsec. After the fireworks display thousands of people sang and danced in the main streets of Newcastle, which were closed to traffic.
