Do Not Dwell Alone-Truman
(11.30 a.m.) RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 5
President Truman, addressing a joint session of the Brazilian Congress today, said Brazil and the United States must continue to cooperate with then sister nations of the Western hemisphere in the development of a strong, concerted force for the good of mankind.
“One of the great lessons v/e have learned in recent generations is that we do not dwell alone,” he said. “One hears expressions of disappointment in the accomplishments of the United Nations but this must not deter us in our constant effort to build the organisation the world needs so badly. “Furthermore we must remember the United Nations was not intended to settle problems arising immediately out of the war but to provide a means of maintaining international, peace after just settlements have been made. “The United Nations is not a temporary expedient. It is a permanent partnership among the peoples of the world for their common peace and wellbeing. “The difficulties encountered have not discouraged us—on the contrary they have increased our determination that it shall succeed,” said President Truman.
