Whpngorei Table Tennis Association

Whakapara can safely lay clairtr to be the most enthusiastic table tennis club in Northland. It has been functioning continuously for many years and even during the war.

The standard of play has always been high and the club has never failed to hold its own in competition with other centres. This season, several inter-club matches have been played, and only once has Whakapara failed to ccme ont on top. That was against Whangarei. when the town dub wound up with four game to spare. There are several clubs in the Whangarei district and enthusiasm is particularly keen at Portland, Poroti and Titoki. It is expected that new clubs will be formed before next winter.

Steps are being taken to constitute a Whangarei association, with all clubs in the district affiliated.

This is a result of the visit of the president and four players from the Auckland association who played exhibition matches in the Bay of Islands and at Whakapara earlier this season. The Whangarei association would have been in operation this year but the seeds were sown a little too late to permit this. The fact that a Whangarei district team travelled to Dargaville recently was an indication that the sport was sure to be properly constituted in the near future. SEVEN OUT OF EIGHT

The team comprised seven Whakapara players and one from Whangarei The Whakapara representatives were J. Davis. J. Bennett and J. Venn (men) and Mrs Audred. Mrs Britcliffe, Mrs J. Davis and Miss Myra Bennett. F. Madden, of Whangarei. completed the team, which scored a very easy win over’ the western players. The Whakapara club played a return match with Portland at Whakapara this week and scored another convincing win by 123 games On Wednesday, a Whakapara B team, comprised of young players, travelled to Maromaku, and had a win oy 21) games to 6. A Northland championship tournament is to be played in Whangarei on October 1. 2 and 3. Entries are expected from clubs all over the North for what is the first such tournament ever held.
