May Buy Rock Drill
Members of the Whangarei County Council are to see a rock drill demonstrated with a view to purchasing one for use in the council's quarries. Cr R. Feaver reported for the council’s machinery committee that he had seen a drill operated satisfactorily in Taranaki. The machine was very successful and many had been sold to the Public Works Department recently. One costing about £l5O was on display in a Whangarei shop and Cr Feaver suggested the council should inspect it. The county engineer (Mr K. W. King) was instructed t 0 arrange a demonstration when the council next meets. Cr Feaver said rock drills could be put to several uses. CHEAPER ROAD MACHINES “County councils should be able to purchase road-making machines at the same advantageous terms as Government departments,” staled Cr H. K. Hewlett. “II the Government can purchase these machines below retail price. 1 think that we should be able to do tlie same, as all county councils are a form ol government.” he continued. Clher councilors supported him and a motion was passed that the douncii’s delegate to the Counties’ Conference being held on July 11, should support any resolution to the Government asking that counties enjoy the same governmental privileges in buying roan-making machines.
