Food Shortages Not All Due To War

Mulholland, president of j Federated Farmers ' of New Zealand,h before leaving Wellington by the Wai- | rangi to attend the' conference of the \ International Federation of Agricul-1 tural Producers at The Hague, commented on problems facing primary producers. The conference, which is the first assembly of farmers on an organised Avorld basis, would be tremendously important to all 'peoples and particularly important to New Zealand because the economic life of the country was bound up with the role of producing foodstuffs, he said. "It is my opinion that the present acute food shortages are as much due to wrong policy and a wrong emphasis on the direction of mankind’s efforts as due to the depredations of war.

“Had the war not intervened the world would still have faced a serious food situation as soon as natural conditions for production became at all adverse.

/ “During the past quarter of a century at least, the world as a whole has enjoyed a season of high production. “It seems that the world is entering a period of less favourable climatic conditions, and therefore a period of lower production.’’ In these circumstances Mr Mulholland added, restoration of farming to the high place it should hold in the minds of people, and in their economic life in particular, and its restoration as a most honoured occupation, had become of supreme importance.
