Municipal Purchase Of Whangarei Milk Concern
THE Whangarei Borough Council is to purchase the milk business of Sothern and Co., Ltd. Mr A. E. Sawyer, a former manager of the concern, has been appointed the council’s manager. These decisions have been made by the emergency committee of the Whangarei Milk Authority, which constitutes the borough council.
In a telegram to the emergency committee, which had power to act, the director of the Milk Marketing Department (Mr H. H. Innes) stated that a satisfactory basis for the purchase of Sothern and Co. Ltd.’s business had been reached with the department. The price has not beep disclosed by the director. He recommended the council to assume managerial responsibility from the date the department took over, repayment to the Crown to be completed later. He suggested the council should make necessary preliminary arrangements. This means that the Government will purchase the business and under a previous agreement with the council transfer it to the council at the same purchase price. FRO VISION OF DWELLING The committee decided to appoint Mr Sawyer as manager of the Municipal Milk Department at a salary of £7OO a year and to ask him to take up ' the appointment at the earliest pos-' sible date, and definitely not later j ihan April 14. j
It was also decided that an amount of £2500, together with the cost of a section of land should be included in the proposed milk loan, the town clerk (Mr L. O. Hall) being instructed to arrange with an architect for preparation of plans of a dwelling with a limited cost of £2500.
In response to a further decision of the committee Mr Sawyer arrived in Whangarei yesterday afternoon and conferred with the emergency committee.
