Wanganeiia Effort Fails
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. It was high tide shortly before noon today, but no attempt was made to refloat the Wanganeiia. The attempt yesterday to refloat the liner failed but the experts, though disappointed, are far from dismayed. It is understood that the attempt was made more as a test without any sanguine hopes of immediate success. Conferences were held yesterday afternoon to decide on a new plan of campaign. The object* still is to increase the buoyancy of the flooded forepart, probably by repairing the more extensive damage near the waterline. Yesterday compressors worked for hours to build up the pressure of air and force the water out of the newlysealed holds. However, damage below the waterline probably allowed the air to escape and the plan did not yield effective results. After an hour's straining by the tugs and hauling on the kedge' anchors, the ship was still solidly seated. Fifteen minutes after high water the attempt was over. There is still no change in the excellent weather.
