Requiring an outright win to annex the Plunket Shield for the season, Wellington put up a bad showing against Otago in the first day’s play yesterday, being dismissed for 202. At stumps, the home side had 37 on the board for the loss of one wicket. The bowling of Ray Robinson, McDougall and Overton was the feature of the day's play. Each secured three wickets.

Tindill and Capstick topped the batting efforts with 44 apiece, and Barber was only seven behind them. Hadlee was batting well at the end of the day and went on today to score 45.
