Bottle Message May Be Echo Of Tragedy
(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Scrawled unevenly on a small slip of cardboard, the following message was found in a ship's beer bottle on the beach at Islington Bay, Motutapu. Hauraki Gulf: "1940. Shipwreck. Will made. 29 Oxford Street, Sydney, Australia. M. Johnson." The d&rdboard is apparently part of a cigarette packet. The cork of the bottle had nearly rotted away. Whether the messageis a hoax or an echo of a wartime tragedy may be known j following inquiries now being made in Australia.
