French Socialists Propose 48hr. Week
(Rec. 12.30 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 7. The French Premier (M. Blum) has announced that his Government is immediately implementing a four-year plan for the reconstruction and modernisation of coal mines, ad the elec-tr.-cily, iron, s:eei, cement," agricultural machinery and transport industries, says Reuter’s Paris correspondent. The plan involves a 48-hour week throughout industry with a basic rate of pay for 40 hours and overtime rates for eight hours. The aim is to raise output by the end of 1947 by 10 to 20 per cent. The first year of the plan provides for the immigration of 250,000 foreigners, of whom 200,000 will be Italians, besides the continued employment in France of 500,000 German prisoners.
Capital expenditure on the plan fo: .947 is estimated to be £294,000,000.
