Illegal Jew Body Issues Communique On Jerusalem Raids
(Rcc. 11.25 a.m.) JERUSALEM, Jan. 3 A "communique” ' issued by an illegal Jewish organisation, Irgun Zvai Leumi, stated that it was responsible for attacks on Jerusalem, Jaffa and Tel Aviv on December 27. Worded in typically-military style, the communique stated that Irgun soldiers took up strategic positions opposite the main police barracks to prevent police reinforcements reaching the attackers who were blowing up the Criminal Investigation Department buildings in the centre of the city. The attackers tried to spare lives. It is officially announced that 900 people were detained yesterday after a round-up in Jerusalem’s central district. ARMED CARS IN STREETS Armed cars lined the street as the police herded the people into an improvised barbed wire street pen before removing them to a detention camp on the outskirts of the city. The police are looking for the distributors of illegal pamphlets in Hebrew, signed by the terrorist organisation known asTthe Stern Gang, which mourned the death of Zvi Aharoni, who was shot and killed while trying to escape after the explosions at police headquarters last week. The pamphlets are believed to be another strong indication that the Stern Gang co-operated in the outrage.
