Spanish Republicans Ready To Revolt

NEW YORK, Jan. 3

The outcome of the forthcoming British-American-French conference in Paris to consider the Spanish situation may determine whether another civil war will break out in Spain.

This statement was made to a Press conference by the Premier of the exiled Spanish Republican Government (Senor Jose Giral). He added that if other Powers did not support the return of the legally constituted Government it might be necessary to have recourse to revolutionary measures. “We do not desire civil war, but will go to this' extreme, if necessary, to overthrow Franco," said Senor Giral. READY TO GIVE SIGNAL “The exiled Government is in close daily contact with the Spanish underground movement and is prepared to give the signal for an uprising at any moment.” Senor Giral advocates diplomatic pressure against Franco, and also an economic embargo on petroleum, cotton, rubber and possibly wheat, “which would cause Spain's entire economic structure to collapse and result in Franco’s immediate downfall.”

Senor Giral confirmed reports that the Spanish Government would move from Mexico City to Paris as soon as the French Government granted permission.

‘PERSECUTED” FRANCO SAYS

Replying to a deputation of jurists, who assured him of their endorsement of the Sp/nish Government's defence of its foreign policy, General Franco said: "The injustice with which Spain is treated abroad could do no less than arouse the spirit of cur supreme magistracy to demonstrate Spanish unity in these critical moments of the world. •‘What is happening is precisely an absolute lack of justice and a total absence of respect for the rights pf others.

"I am confident that this will be overcome, and Spain will receive all the consideration she - merits by her history and her. constant services to peace and civilisation.”
