Whangarei Crowded
Christinas shopping has intensified to a marked extent in .Whangarei during the last few days. ,
Yesterday and again today the street wire crowded. The bulk of the influx was from the country, farmers and their families having come to town to purchase their Christmas requirements.
Everybody looked happy. The fact that only .07 of an inch 'of rain fell in the 44 hours up to 9 a.m. today, when at least a couple of inches were needed, did not appear to cause any distress..
The gross ppyotit by the Whangarei Dairy Company for December was £64,105, by Hikurangi, £46,225, ■ and at Maungatapere £26,224/11/0.
The advances were, made at an increased rate of Id. per lb. butterfat. In December last year, Whangarei paid out £53,861, Hikurangi £42,642, and Maungatapere £24,591/13/8.
Every inch of parking accommodation was taken up in the main streets, and the overflow extended into the back streets. Several central backlanes . resembled parking sites in Auckland on a peacetime Christmas Eve. Cafler’s Avenue was especially popular and in the early afternoon both > sides were packed from the library'to the gates leading into the park.
