Take the simple homecraft of tatting known by every civilised woman in the world. Centuries ago the first people to do tatting were the Yorkshire fishermen who carried this homecraft into the weaving of nets, to battle with men against the sea. These nets were specially treated and hung out in the fields to mature and to give them extra strength in their fight against the tides and storms and elements of w eather... and reap the harvest of the sea. And thus was handed down to future generations the craftsmanship of weaving and tatting. It is easy therefore to understand the explanation of the name TATTERSFIELD, for the ..fields where the tatters spread their nets to mature were called the Tatters’ Fieldsy and thus was born a name which in subsequent generations has become famed the world over as pioneers in weaving and leaders ,in the manufacture of superlatively fine mattresses and rugs.
