W 33 NEW YEAR’S DAY AT COOPER’S BEACH Everyone that attended the annual Maori sports at Cooper's Beach last New Year's Day was enthusiastic about the pleasure of the outing. There is no doubt that this is one of the most beautiful spots in New Zealand for a picnic outing, being unique with the grassy paddocks going down to the fringe of pohutukawas along the edge of the beach. Interest will be maintained all day with races for young and old, haka and poi competitions and tugs-o’-war. A chain stepping competition will be run off every hour so as to give the experts a chance to show their skill. As usual at these Maori picnics, a kapa Maori will be-a feature of the day, and steps are being taken this year to see that no one attending will be disappointed. Given a fine day, Cooper’s Beach should be a rendezvous for everyone in the county on New Year’s Day. 210
