Kaitaia Meeting To Discuss Re-Routing Of State Highway?
(Special) RAWENE. This Da: Making an endeavour to gain unar i imity of aims on the. project for di version of the No. 1 State Highwa through North Hokianga instead c over the 1135 ft. Mangamuka Saddle a at present, the Hokianga Count Council hopes to arrange a meetin with the Mangonui County Council Kaitaia Town Board, and other loca organisations early in the new year. The meeting would be at Kaitai; and the Hokianga suggestion is tha all bodies interested in the projec should be invited .to attend and ex press their views and support. It would serve a good purpose, councillors considered at their Dedembe: meeting yesterday, if it only contacted the Mangonui point of view. Hokianga naturally is extremelj keen on the proposal to divert the main arterial thoroughfare of the Fai North. Their case is that the route would be virtually the same distance gs at present, and would open up good farming country all the way. It would digress from the present route at Umawera, and would cross a narrow arm of the Hokianga Harbour to Tutekahua, then go straight on to Broadwood, Waitehue, Takahue and Kaitaia. The Hokianga council left arrangements for the meeting in the hands of its clerk (Mr. H. Chappell).
