Mopping Up Behind N.Z.E.F. Spearhead

(Official N.Z.E.F. War Correspondent) TRIESTE, May 3. While the New Zealand Division raced from the Piave to Trieste, with a spearhead battalion probing in. t'on for the enemy and the bulk of the Division strung out in a fast-moving column many miles long, the 21st, 23id and 28th battalions brought up in the rear and spread out widely on either flank Their task was clearing the country of the enemy on both sides of our axis advance. Though they met some resistance, these battalions found many thousands of Germans ready to surrender, and by the time the division had reached Monfalcone, units engaged in mopping-up were many mrles behind and very busy handling huge groups of prisoners. The total as yet is unknown, but it is clear that had our advance not been so fast and from the start so full ol surprises, the Germans would have had time to mass very strong forces against the division at several points.
