Smashing Air Attack On Jap. Convoy
(Rec. 2.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. A smashing night attack by Admiral Halsey’s bombers on a Japanese convoy in Bougainvile Strait. Central Solomons, is reported in today’s communique from General MacArthur’s headquarters. • * .
The communique states: “Our night reconnaissance bombers sighted and attacked 11 ships in an enemy convoy attempting to run our blockade. “Several direct- hits were scored on each of four different vessels. One ship was destroyed by a large explosion, followed by fires which were visible for 20 miles. Another vessel when hit capsized and sank. “A destroyer exploded after four direct hits, and a fourth large vessel received two direct, hits on the stern.”
