Trades Unions Must Discipline Unionists
(Rec. 2 p.m.) LONDON, October 1. The Minister for Labour (Mr. Bevin) today issued a statement on the armament workers’ strike at Barrow. Mr Bevin said the Government was de 4 ermined to support constitutional methods of settling industrial - questions, and the success of these methods depended on trade unions maintaining their authority. The strikers’ contention was that under certain war conditions some unskiled or halfskilled workers received- more than expert craftsmen. Mr. Bevin said the dispute was now settled, and the decision of the tribunal was final and binding. Workers who were striking were over-ruling their trade union. They were, therefore, slowing-up the war effort and endangering the lives of Britain's fighting men. The only honourable course for them was to accept the tribunal’s decision and. to return to work. -v
