SE» HAKARU. Mrs. Cooper presided over a good attendance of members at the September meeting of Hakaru Institute. After the singing of the Institute song, a letter was read from Sergt. ElliotBrown, overseas, thanking members for a parcel of comforts, which had been forwarded to him. Mi's. Nat Mason showed several styles for children’s aprons, and distributed patterns to be made up for sale at the patriotic bazaar. Patterns of toys were also cut, these to be stuffed for competition in October. A competition for sugar-bag articles showed a wonderful selection of useful entries. These are to be held for the bazaar. Competition results: Soldier’s cake, Mrs. Stewart 1, Mrs. Cooper 2. Sugar-bag article. Miss Bagnall 1, Mrs. O. Stewart and Miss A. Richter, equal. 2. Prize bloom: Mrs. Harrison, senr.. 1. Mrs. Gouk 2. K, U AT AN GAT A The August meeting was held a week later than usual, on account of bad weather. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mrs. Cossill. Two visitors were welcomed. The secretary read several letters from soldiers overseas thanking members for parcels received. The roll-call, “Methods of dealing with flies,” was useful. The sales table was well stocked, and brisk business resulted.

The points competition, “A cushion made from scraps,” brought varied entries, and was won by Miss S. Shepherd, with Miss B. Johnston second. Hostesses were Mrs. Flyger and Miss N. Johnston. OPUAWHANGA

The September meeting was held at the residence of Mrs. Jones. There was a good attendance of members, presided over by Mrs. Huwiler. The roll-call, “What I would do if I won £2000,” brought forward mostly holiday suggestions. Mrs. Huwiler gained first place in the competition, “Something new from something old,” with Mrs. Nankivell second. Mrs. Croft gave a very interesting demonstration of making a sponge, and baking in an electric oven. Mrs. Huwiler also gave an interesting demonstration on decorating a cake. The hostesses for lunch and afternoon tea were Mrs. Bushby and Miss E. Attwcod. . . The meeting closed with the smging of the Institute song. TUTUKAKA, The Tutukaka Women’s Institute held their monthly meeting on September 21, at the homo of Mrs. McKenzie. There, was a good attendance. The meeting opened with the Institute song, and Miss McKenzie read the Aspirations. J . The competition for a plate of mixed biscuits was won by Miss Ferguson. Mrs. Wellington was second and Mrs. Jenkins and Miss McKenzie, equal, third. Mrs. Wellington brought the best bloom. Scarves, balaclavas and a pair of socks were handed in and more wool distributed. Hostesses’ competitions were won by Mrs. McKenzie and Miss Wellington. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs. Badmington and Miss Mason.

TAUMARERE The monthly meeting of the above was held in the pavilion on September 7, McMullen presiding. There was a good attendance. The meeting opened with the singing of the “Hymn of Peace. Mrs. Edwards was appointed delegate for the committee to attend the Haeremai group meeting. , _ , A circular from the Eay of Islands Federation notified the members that the half-yearlv council meeting would take place at Kaikohe on October 9. Remus were discussed and Mrs. Boel was appointed delegate and Mrs. Bryers hostess. Mrs. McMullen gave a comprehensive and interesting report of the conference held at Gisborne. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. McMullen. The motto, given by Mrs. Wyatt, was: “Give to the world the best you have, and the best will come back to you.” The roll-call, “Saying or reading a piece of poetry,” was well entered into. Mrs. Wvatt gave the Golden Thread, taking India as her subject. This was attentively listened to and appreciated. Donations and gifts for the Leper Fund were generously given. Afternoon tea, served by the hostess, Mrs. Bryers, brought the meeting to a close.
