Denial Of Election Day Rumour
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The unusual course of permitting an electoral notification to be broadcast on the morning of the polling was authorised by the Minister for Broadcasting (Mr. D. Wilson) on Saturday, when 2YA issued a statement denying a rumour that Mr. N. P. Croft, National candidate for Hutt. had withdrawn from the contest. A rumour to this effect had been officially denied by Mr. Croft earlier in the week, but it had apparently persisted. The rumour was that Mr. Croft had intimated his withdrawal and was urging National Party supporters to vote for Ihe Independent candidate, Mr. J. Hogan. Apparently feeling that his previous published denial had not silenced the rumour, Mr. Croft’s committee requested permission on Saturday morning to have the denial broadcast and the correct position placed before the electors. Mr. Wilson confirmed last night that a request had been received from Mr. Croft’s committee to broadcast a denial. He considered the request reasonable and fair and had sanctioned the broadcast.
