Probation Allowed Kaikohe Soldier
(Special) AUCKLAND. This Day. A young Maori soldier, Parihaka Te Awa, who was committed from Kaikohe. was placed on probation for three years when he appeared before Mr. Justice Fair for sentence on charges of forgery and uttering. For the Crd.vn, Mr. S. Clc-al said it was possible that others were implicated in the offence of obtaining money at the expense of a comrade, but Te Awa had declined to give any information about them. I-lis Honor said the theft was a mean one involving ioss of £2O to the Post Office through a comrade's bank account. On the other hand the probation officer’s report was favourable. A condition of probation was abstinence from drink and restitution of £2O. The prisoner will thus have an opportunity of rejoining his unit and becoming a good soldier.
