Perry Supports Bill

;P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day It was clear that the prices of real property had been rising for some time path said the Minister for the Armed Forces and War Co-ordination (Mr Perry) speaking on the Servicemen’s Settlement and Land Sales Bill in the Legislative Council last night. Ttic R.S.A. was the only organisation that had given any real thought to getting land for ex-servicemen. The mistake after the last war of placing inexperienced men on high-priced lands would not be repeated. The R.S.A. approved the principles of the Bill. The only organisation with any alternatives was the Farmers' Union, whose proposals were, to say the least, extraordinary. As no one else had any suggestions, he was constrained to vote for the Bill. Mr Perry said that, in the committee stage, lie would move an amendment that no land be taken from any returned serviceman until there was no other land available. The Bill was a war measure and might inflict some hardship, but the war had worked hardships and they should be borne cheerfully for the benefit of men who went overseas to protect property in New Zealand.

Second Reading Passed The Council spent all the afternoon and evening until 11 pan. on discussion of the second reading of the Bill except for 45 minutes taken to pass the Finance Bill (No. 3) through all stages. On completing the second reading of the Land Sales Bill the Council adjourned until 2.30 today.
