Land Sales Courts To Cost £54,000 Annually

(P.A.) WELLINGTON. This Day. The probable cost of setting up a Land Sales Court and Committees was discussed under the vote for the Lands and Survey Department. Mr. Holland said that as a vote of £30.000 was for the balance of the year, it appeared that the annual vote would be between £75,000 and £BO.OOO He asked how the estimate was arrived at. and if any of the amount was recoverable from parties going before the Court.

Mr Nash said the cost could not be considered excessive even if it amounted to £IOO.OOO. as it would be a magnificent investment in that it would stop speculation which, in one period of three years, had cost £ 14.000.000 in land agents' fees and expenses. The estimate for the full year was £54.000. The presiding Judge would be paid £2OOO. and his associates anything from £GOO to £IOOO. Associates and committee members would be paid according to their ability. He was not going to say what they would be paid, as he could not commit the Government until they knew the type of men to be paid.
