WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

OPUAWIIANGA The Opuawhanga Institute had a beautiful day for their August meeting. Mrs. Huwiler presided over a full attendance of members* The competition, “Something from an old felt hat.” was won by Miss Evelene Attv.’ccd, with Miss May Attwood second. The roll-call, "My oldest possession,” brought forward many old and interesting articles. Donations from the district brought the sales table for July to £3/14/2. Parcels are to be sent to all local boys serving' overseas as Christmas greetings from the. Institute. A donation was also sent to the Leper Fund. The hostesses were Mrs. Nankivell and Miss Enid Jones. The social hour was spent in competitions and games, which were enjoyed by all. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem. MATAPOURI Th“ Matapottri Institute held their monthly meeting in the hall on August lii. Mrs. Woolley presided, and the attendance was good. Mrs. Clements gave her report on the recent Women's Institute Conference in Gisborne. The competition for the month, "A tin of biscuits for soldiers,” was wen by Miss Morrison, with Mrs. Morrison second. Mrs. Watson brought the best bloom. Potatoes were distributed for the “Dir, For Victory” campaign, and the afternoon closed with an enjoyable cup of tea, and the singing of the Ode. PAPAROA The August meeting, presided over by Mrs. Hay, was well attended. The competitions brought, a goodly number of entries. The best-darned working sock was shown by Mrs. Sam Dodds, the best collection of daffodils was won by Miss S. CJift' and the best bloom by Mrs. Efford. After the usual business had been transacted a very interesting talk was given by Miss White, a visitor to the district, on some cf her experiences as a V.A.D., from training in Trentham to her return on furlough from Egypt. The president thanked the speaker and the meeting expressed their appreciation in the usual way. In response to an appeal for funds for comforts for lepers, it was decided to place a box for contributions on the table at the September and October meetings. Hostesses were Mesdames S. Dodds and A. Martin. There was a good response to Hie. rollcall. “What I do in the evening." The singing of the National Anthem brought to a close another happy afternoon.
