An appeal for release from the army on the ground that she did not feci she was earning her money at present was lodged before the No. 1 Appeal Board by Mavis Maynard, a member of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps. The reservist said it was her duty to answer the telephone, and she received about one ring a day. All she did was keep her buttons polished. She mid the board that her superior officers bad no objection to her leaving the army. The board reserved its decision pending receipt of advice to that effect from her superior officer. * * * * Brownies' First Birthday Completion of the- inaugural year of the lsl Whangarei Brownie Pack was celebrated happily at tin: Methodist Hall on Saturday alternoon when parents and members of the 2nd Whangarei pack were guests at a birthday parly, over which the Brown Owl, Mrs. J. A. Green, presided. Sixty Brownies took part. After games, a fairy ring was formed, recruits enrolled and second class badges and service stars were presented and sixers and seconds received their stripes. The children were addressed by the Commissioner, Mrs. J. S. Horrell. Items were given by Marion and Ruth A’Court, Beryl McLachlan, Valerie Jones, Audrey Bateson and members of the 2nd Whangarei pack. The single candle on the birthdav cake was extinguished by Ruth A’Cour! and full justice clone to afternoon tea. Subsequently, the children were addressed by Rev. G. Brown and by Rev. F. Gardner Brown, who has recently returned from the Middle East, where he was a chaplain
