Kiska Bombed, Shelled
(8.0. W., 1 p.m. RUGBY, July 23. Naval and -air bombing of Kiska is announced in a United States Navy Department communique, which states: “Yesterday Japanese bombers attacked Funafuti. Ellice Islands. Two Japanese bombers were shot down. Material damage is not reported, but seme casualties were sustained. “In the North Pacific, on Thursday, heavy bombers attacked a runway and main camp area in Kiska. Numerous hits were scored, and several fh'cs were started. Yesterday, heavy and light surface units bombarded positions in Kiska. The enemy returned the fire. No United States ships were damaged. Aerial reconnaissance from Alaskan headquarters indicates that despite repeated American bombings, the Japanese have completed a 3700 feet aeroplane runway on Kiska. The Associated Press says that the enemy evidently does net intend abandoning the island without a vicious battle.
