Struck Mine.—China Central News report that more than 800 Japanese were Killed when an enemy gunboat laden with explosives struck a mine near tnc Yangtse River port of Matang. Admiral Arrested. —At Algiers the French police arrested Admiral Derrien, who was naval prefect of Bizerta during German occupation. The arrest was made at Admiral Berrien’s home at Datna, outside Constantine. It follows trie decision of the French Committee of National Liberation on May 19 to investigate the attitude of certain unnamed Frenchmen holding office under the Germans. Privy Council.—His Majesty the King held a Privy Council, attended by the Lord President (Sir John Anderson) and the Duke of Norfolk, Lord Geddes. Sir Andrew Duncan and Mr. Harcourt Johnstone. The. King's new private secretary (Sir Alan Lasceiles) was. sworn in as a member of the Privy Council. The King received in audience Vice-Admiral Sir Herbert. Fitzherbert on relinquishing the India command. Assassinated.—A German news agency reports that an assassin killed Nicola Cnristoff, Governor of Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria. Two Communists are reported to have attacked and seriously . injured Christoff while he was travelling to his home. He died soon after. Bombs on Crete. American bombers raided airfields in Crete yesterday. Belgian Power Stations Bombed.—Boston bombers attacked two power stations in Belgium this afternoon, dropping delayed action bombs from 50 feet. The weather was ideal. One bomber came out of a cloud and dropped all its bombs on a power station, which was destroyed. Bombs were seen to hit another station, but results w r ere not observed. Czech Travail.—The Germans executed at least 50,000 Czech men and women between their occupation of Czechoslovakia in March, 1939, and the middle of May this year, according to Dr. Ripka, Czechoslovakian Minister for State. During the same period 200,000 were sent to concentration camps and 500,000 deported to forced labour.
